Email Links Still Not Opening Gmail
If clicking an email hyperlink in PIPE Preview still doesn’t redirect to Gmail, try these fixes:
1. Confirm Gmail Is Actually Set as the Mail Handler
Sometimes Chrome says it’s allowed, but it doesn’t register.
Do this:
Open Gmail: [https://mail.google.com](https://mail.google.com)
Click the lock icon in the address bar
Click Site settings
Scroll to Handlers
Make sure it is set to Allow
Then reload Gmail and try again.
2. Remove Other Mail Handlers (Outlook, Mail App, Extensions)
Chrome will only use one handler, and Outlook often hijacks it.
Check this:
Go to:
chrome://settings/handlersUnder Email, click the dropdown
Make sure it says:✅ mail.google.com
If you see Outlook or Windows Mail, remove them: Click the *trash icon** next to other handlers
3. Reset Handler Settings Completely
Chrome sometimes stores old protocol settings.
Reset:
Go to:
chrome://settings/handlersScroll down to Sites that can handle protocols
Remove Gmail if listed
Restart Chrome
Re-add Gmail again (Step 3)
4. Check Windows Default Apps (Big One)
Even if Chrome is correct, Windows may still send mailto links elsewhere.
Fix:
Open Settings
Go to Apps → Default apps
Search for MAILTO
Set it to: ✅ Google Chrome (not Outlook)
Also check:* Email app default = Chrome
5. Test Outside PIPE First
To confirm whether PIPE is the issue or Chrome is:
Test here: Click this link in a normal webpage: 📩 mailto:test@example.com
If Gmail doesn’t open → Chrome/Windows issue
If it works → PIPE preview may block handlers
6. PIPE Preview Might Be Blocking mailto Links
Some embedded previews (like iframes or secure viewers) prevent redirects.
Workaround:
Right-click the email link → *Copy email address**
* Paste directly into Gmail compose OR * Open PIPE in a full browser tab instead of embedded preview
7. Disable Extensions That Interfere
Ad blockers, privacy tools, or email extensions can break mailto handling.
Quick test:
Open Chrome Incognito
Ctrl+Shift+NTry clicking the email link again
If it works in Incognito → an extension is interfering.
8. Clear Chrome Protocol Cache (Last Resort)
Go to:
chrome://settings/contentScroll to Additional permissions
Click Protocol handlers
Reset everything
Then restart Chrome.
9. Try a Different Browser Temporarily
Just to isolate:
* Microsoft Edge supports Gmail handlers too
* Firefox needs manual mailto settings
✅ Quick Best Path
If you want the fastest fix, do these 3 in order:
Set Windows MAILTO default → Chrome
Remove Outlook as a handler in Chrome
Test mailto link outside PIPE
